Passage: Proverbs 31:8-9
Description: The advice given to an ancient King found in the book of Proverbs serves as a simple three step approach each of us can take to confront the injustice many in our nation are still facing.
Date: Sunday, June 28, 2020       Teacher: Mark Smith     Duration: 52 mins 59 secs
Passage: 1 John 5:14-21
Description: John closes his letter with additional words of encouragement. First he points out the confidence that believers can have as they pray and the reason for it, and then he points out the confidence they gain from what they know. With a brief warning, John ends this letter to his beloved "little children."
Date: Sunday, June 21, 2020       Teacher: Mark Smith     Duration: 36 mins 11 secs
Description: John uses the word 'know' eight times in the closing chapter of his first letter, and the words 'faith' or 'believe' seven times. This focus on knowing and believing is part of John's desire to close his letter with words that will encourage his readers. In the first part of the chapter, John focuses on faith and what faith does for the Christian.
Date: Sunday, June 14, 2020       Teacher: Mark Smith     Duration: 27 mins 37 secs
Passage: 1 John 4:13-21
Description: As John begins to conclude his letter, he reviews one of his important themes: that genuine members of the fellowship with God can be confident in their standing before Him and can be certain they will be with Him eternally. John brings back three terms he already used: abide, love, and perfected to show how those together provide the security genuine children of God can enjoy.

Passage: 1 John 4:7-12
Description: In a time when our nation deals once again with the presence of racism, John's message on love that we'll deal with today could not be more timely. Racism is a sin and like all sin produces actions, attitudes, feelings, and practices that hurt other people who are created in the image of God. Sin is a matter of the heart and only God changes hearts. As needed as other actions are to reduce the incidence of racism, we need heart change more than anything. When God's love fills our hearts that love isn't limited by the color of a person's skin, their economic status, level of education, background, or even their behavior. We'll learn about the nature of God's love, how we know he loves us, and discover two reasons God wants his children to love others in this important passage.
Date: Sunday, May 24, 2020       Teacher: Mark Smith     Duration: 34 mins 51 secs
Passage: 1 John 3:19-24
Description: Insecurity in a relationship can be devastating. It can introduce fear, anxiety, depression, and anger. It can lead us to withdraw from or distance ourselves from the other person and lead us to over analyze and/or sometimes mistake that person's words or actions. The same can happen to a child of God when he/she is unsure of his/her relationship to God. John's talk of the love believers are to show each other could lead some sensitive believers to conclude they must not be born-again Christians at all. To counter this, John lets his readers know that God wants them to have a secure relationship with him and he points to the right source of assurance of a genuine born-again experience in this passage.
Date: Sunday, May 17, 2020       Teacher: Mark Smith     Duration: 34 mins 6 secs
Passage: 1 John 3:11-18
Description: In some churches it seems people are in a hurry to leave. At North Park we see folks talking with others and hanging out long after the service is over. A visitor noticed and said, "Your people really seem to love each other." We'll see in this week's passage that love for fellow born-again Christians is exactly what God expects to see among us. As John returns to the theme of love his emphasis changes. He focuses on not one's claims of love but on demonstrations of love. If our love is genuine, John says, it will show. You can't fake genuine love.

Passage: 1 John 3:4-10
Description: Sin may not seem to be a big deal to us, but it is to God, and so the way God's children relate to sin says a lot about their claim to know hi and about their ongoing relationship with him. In this passage John continues the theme of why God's children seek to purify themselves by explaining the nature of sin and why practicing sin is incompatible with a genuine relationship with God. It's a word for every professing believer today.
Date: Sunday, May 03, 2020       Teacher: Mark Smith     Duration: 35 mins 5 secs
Passage: 1 John 3:1-3
Description: The apostle John reminds us of another basic truth of Christianity. Born-again believers have become God's children. John has known this for 60+ years when he writes, but the fact still awes him. In this short passage John will affirm the fact, speak of the amazing future God's children have, and close by mentioning the consuming desire of God's children.
Date: Sunday, April 26, 2020       Teacher: Mark Smith     Duration: 47 mins 33 secs
Passage: 1 John 2:18-28
Description: I does matter what we believe. In fact, sometimes what we believe reveals whether or not we are in genuine fellowship with God and with his Son, Jesus. This is the truth of the section of John's first letter that we'll examine today. Here John reveals a second test of genuine fellowship with God: the test of right belief. In a time when hundreds of religions exist and tolerance is the mantra of our day, John's warning could not be more relevant.
