Getting Ministry Right: Correcting and Forgiving

2 Corinthians 2:4-11 by Mark Smith
Series:Getting Ministry Right - The Message of 2 Corinthians

The Corinthian church had two problems the modern church has: correcting members who hurt the church, and forgiving those who've been corrected and repent. Paul's 'sorrowful' letter had the impact he hoped it would - leading the church to correct an erring member. But the church hadn't done enough. The member had repented and they hadn't forgiven him. Paul writes to urge them to do so. Failure to forgive opened them up to the schemes of the devil, Paul warned. We learn a valuable lesson on getting ministry right from this personally difficult incident in Paul's life. There are times a church needs to administer correction, but that correction must be aimed at restoration, not punishment. That means that forgiveness should be readily available once repentance has occurred.
