In this message we’ll look at the foundation we can find in the Bible for healthy self-esteem. Instead of a foundation built on what others think about us and what they value, or what we think about ourselves and value, we will be able to build our self-esteem on the foundation of what God says about us. We’ll note three components of this solid foundation: How God sees us, how God feels about us, and how God looks at the issue of performance.

This week we have to do some de-construction. Just like Peter had to be confronted with the weakness of the foundation on which he’d built his self-esteem before God could build a better foundation for him, we need to be willing to honestly look at the real health of our self-esteem and the foundation we are building it on if God is ever going to replace it with his foundation.

We’ll look at two Bible people who had low self-esteem and the foundation upon which theirs was based. After this we’ll list some symptoms of low self-esteem so we can do some self-evaluation, then reveal the foundation which produces low self-esteem, and discover why that foundation cannot produce healthy self-esteem.

Of all the people in the world, Christ-followers have reason to have healthy self-esteem, yet, many of them do not. It’s primarily a matter of foundation. The question we need to answer is, “On what are you building your self-image?” Your foundation makes all the difference.

In this first message in a series on self-esteem we’ll study the self-esteem of Peter, the apostle. We’ll discover that he seemed to have quite healthy self-esteem, but that esteem was shattered, leaving him depressed and feeling unqualified for future ministry, Jesus helped him replace what he was building his self-esteem on, and the change in Peter was dramatic. From Peter we’ll see in outline the weakness of a common foundation for self-esteem, Satan’s interest in giving us low self-esteem, and God’s way of providing a better foundation for healthy self-esteem.
