As children we were taught to say "Thank you" when someone did something nice or extra for us. As followers of Christ it should be routine and natural for us to say "Thank you" to him. In Psalm 92 we are encouraged to give thanks because it is a good thing to do. Then the Psalm teaches us four reasons we should say "Thank you" to God. I think we could all add to their number. What would you add?

The second help God has given to born-again believers so they can pursue holiness is the indwelling Holy Spirit. From the Apostle Paul we'll hear about his own struggle with sin and the victory he experienced through the Holy Spirit. Then we'll learn how the Holy Spirit can help us overcome temptation and live the way we know we want to. There couldn't be a more important and practical truth for believers than this particular one.

We admit we have trouble being holy. Are we left to struggle on our own to be more pleasing to God? The next three messages will show us that God has done some powerful things to enable us to truly pursue holiness and achieve greater holiness of life. This week we focus on the new nature God has placed within every born-again believer and how living in that new nature is a powerful antidote to temptation and sin.

Most Christians would probably say that their problem with personal holiness is sin. As we'll see today, that isn't so. The real problem with personal holiness is not sin but how we handle temptation. In this message we'll learn what temptation is and where it originates. We'll learn what is involved in handling temptation the right way, and we'll conclude by outlining a temptation response system that will help us deal with temptation so it doesn't lead to sin. If you want to pursue holiness, you have to learn to deal with temptation in the right way.

The church needs a fresh focus on holiness according to a poll conducted by Barna Research. We couldn't agree more. But what exactly is holiness? It seems Christians and non-Christians are confused about this. In this message we'll answer that question, first by turning to the pages of the Hebrew Testament to encounter the One who is truly holy: God. Then we'll turn to the Greek Testament and discover two aspects of holiness it reveals. We'll then have a decision to make about this holiness: will we pursue it or not?

In this opening message we'll focus on the signs that even in the church holiness has fallen on hard times, and, more important, that holiness is not optional for the believer.

As we close our series on the major miracles of Jesus there is a question some people have, "Should we expect miracles today?" Before we can answer that question, we have to answer another, "Why did Jesus perform miracles? "What was the purpose behind the miracles that Jesus performed?" This actually isn't a difficult question to answer. The gospels provide the answer for us. In this message we'll learn the five purposes Jesus had for performing miracles.

On the storm-tossed Sea of Galilee the disciples learned another lesson about Jesus when he came to them walking on the water. Boldly, Peter asked Jesus to invite him out of the boat, and he, too, briefly walked on water. Then his faith faltered and Jesus had to rescue him from sinking. The disciples knew from their Hebrew scriptures that only God walks on water, so realized that Jesus was the Son of God.

God has always provided food for his creatures. Most of the time this is done through the normal working of nature, but on some occasions God intervened directly to provide or multiply existing food. It was something only God could do. As we open to the scriptures for this message we discover Jesus had the power to do what only God previously could do: miraculously produce or multiply food. We'll try to learn what the disciples were slow to learn from this miracle of feeding 5,000 people using five small loaves and two small fish.

On his way to heal a sick young girl, Jesus was interrupted by a woman who'd been sick for 12 years. In different ways Jesus restored two people's lives that day, one older and one younger. Jesus restored one from a debilitating physical condition, and the other from death. As we'll see Jesus is still restoring lives today. Can your name be added to the list of lives Jesus has restored?

Jesus' perplexing response to a need for healing led to one of the most dramatic evidences of who he was. The raising of Lazarus from the dead after four days showed that Jesus really was who he claimed to be, the Resurrection and the Life. Jesus is still raising people from spiritual death to spiritual life. Believing in him will bring you rich spiritual life now, and life for eternity with God.
